Executive Committee

Jack Henion, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Chief Scientific Officer and Chairman

Jack HenionDr. Henion is an internationally recognized leader in the field of MS and LC/MS. He is credited with nine patents and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals. In addition to his work at Advion, Dr. Henion managed a major research laboratory at Cornell University, where he served as a professor of toxicology for more than 24 years and is now Emeritus Professor of Analytical Toxicology. Under his leadership and vision, Advion has established itself as one of the largest and most respected LC/MS contract laboratories in the world and a leader in chip-based nanoelectrospray mass spectrometry.

Dr. Henion earned a bachelor's degree from Alfred University, a master’s of science from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. from the State University of New York in Albany and a post doctoral appointment at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists has recognized him as a Fellow for his contributions to analytical chemistry. In recognition of his contributions in the field of MS, Dr. Henion has received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Ghent, Belgium and the University of Uppsala, Sweden.  Dr. Henion is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Royal Society of Chemistry (BA FRSC).

David B. Patteson
President and Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors

David B. PattesonMr. Patteson's career spans nearly twenty-five years of analytical, process, and synthetic organic chemistry instrumentation business experience. Mr. Patteson's skills involve strategic planning, acquisitions and integration, global expansion, and profit enhancement. For over seven years prior to joining Advion, he served in varying capacities including President and CEO of Biotage, Inc., and following a number of mergers and acquisitions, served as President of the Biotage Discovery Chemistry Group and was on the Executive Committee of Biotage AB, a significant life science company publicly traded on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Prior to Biotage, Mr. Patteson led a multi-hundred million dollar business group for the UK-based global engineering and instrumentation company Invensys. Mr. Patteson holds two separate bachelor degrees from the University of Richmond and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He also completed a two year multi-national executive program in International Management conducted through IMD in Switzerland. Mr. Patteson serves on board of directors for The University of Virginia Foundation, the University of Virginia - Coulter Foundation Board for Translational Research and the University of Richmond Council, and the boards of two privately held biotechnology companies.

Thomas Kurz, M.B.A.
Co-Founder and President, BioServices and Corporate Development

Thomas KurzMr. Kurz oversees the Advion BioServices subsidiary. He is the co-founder of Advion with Dr. Henion and has over 20 years of management experience in service industries. Mr. Kurz has held general management responsibility for the bioanalytical business of Advion from 1993 through 2003 and from late 2005 to the present. Over this period, the business experienced a compound annual growth rate of over 20%. Mr. Kurz was instrumental in the start-up of Advion BioSystems, where he oversaw product introduction and market development for the TriVersa NanoMate and ESI Chip product. Prior to co-founding Advion, Mr. Kurz worked for two years managing the sales, marketing, and business planning functions of a NIDA-certified laboratory that is now part of Quest Diagnostics. Mr. Kurz also worked for 7 years with the Verizon Corporation in various general management, marketing, and strategic planning functions relating to various service offerings. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and an M.B.A. from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Timothy J. McGrath
Executive Vice President, Operations and Technology

Timothy J. McGrathMr. McGrath leads the BioServices Laboratory Operations and BioAnalysis organizations, BioSystems Production, R&D, Customer Support & Service and Quality organizations as well as the Corporate Procurement, Facilities, and IT functions. Mr. McGrath has 25 years of experience in process analytical and synthetic organic chemistry instrumentation and distributed control systems projects. Prior to joining Advion, he was Vice President of Operations for Biotage AB for over 6 years, where he created world-class global organizations in manufacturing, quality, and service; and managed the product development team for numerous serial and custom-engineered instrumentation platforms. He is experienced in global ERP business system implementation and has participated in extensive due diligence and integration for several acquisitions. Under Mr. McGrath’s leadership, Biotage implemented same day shipment of all consumable product lines and increased on-time shipment service levels to 99.8%. Prior to Biotage, Mr. McGrath spent 18 years with UK-based Invensys, a global engineering and instrumentation company. He functioned in various key management roles including General Manager of the Process Analytical Systems Division.

Mr. McGrath received a BS in Business Management from the University of Massachusetts in 1981.

Joseph Kiely
Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration/Treasurer

Joseph KielyMr. Kiely leads the Finance and Accounting Group and serves as the Secretary and Treasurer of Advion BioSciences, Inc. He is responsible for accounting, company financing, corporate administration, and investor/management reporting for Advion. Prior to joining the company, he spent 8 years consulting for BearingPoint Inc. (formally KPMG Consulting) within the World Class Finance group, where he advised chief financial officers about strategy, organization design, process improvement, and technology solutions. He was integral in the product development of BearingPoint’s Global Shared Services offering for Finance and Human Resource organizations. Before BearingPoint, he worked in the Audit Practice at KPMG LLP.

Mr. Kiely earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Siena College and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Dan Huston
Senior Director Human Resources

Dan HustonMr. Huston joined Advion in November 2006. He has over 25 years of Human Resources experience, primarily in high-tech manufacturing settings in the telecommunications and life sciences industries. He previously served as Vice President of Human Resources for Biotage AB, where he had the responsibility for global human resources activities. He also managed the Human Resources function for AT&T/Lucent Technologies’ printed circuit board manufacturing facility with over 2,200 employees in Richmond, VA. Mr. Huston has been involved in a wide variety of strategic and tactical HR activities, both internationally and in the US. Additionally, he has had experience with a number of major change events including business mergers, acquisitions, and sales.

Mr. Huston received a BA Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, and obtained an MBA from the University of Richmond.

Scientific/Regulatory Leadership and European Operations

Stephen Lowes, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, Scientific

Stephen LowesDr. Lowes joined Advion in 1995 and has directed the operation of the contract business since 1997. He has overall responsibility for the scientific leadership of the bioanalytical contract business and has focused on the application of LC/MS technologies to regulated bioanalytical work. Dr. Lowes serves on several committees and focus groups that are influential to the progress of bioanalytical science and is a frequent presenter at national and international meetings. He also has been directly involved in the R&D group, offering scientific insights on the application of new LC/MS developments. He is co-inventor of the technology behind one of the ESI Chip patents.

Before joining Advion, Dr. Lowes headed an applications group at VG (now Micromass/Waters), where he participated in the product management, design, and development of a new MS platform for LC/MS analysis. He earned a bachelor's degree from Sheffield Polytechnic and a Ph.D. from Open University. In 1992, he was admitted as a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry as a Chartered Chemist.

Mark Allen, Ph.D.
Managing Director - European Operations

Mark AllenDr. Allen joined Advion in 2001, establishing Advion's European organization, headquartered in Norwich, UK. He is responsible for the global sales and marketing of Advion products and is the Managing Director of Advion BioSciences Ltd. in Europe. Dr. Allen has over 20 years of LC/MS business experience, spending the majority of his career with Applied Biosystems®/MDS SCIEX®. He has held positions including Senior Product Manager for LC/MS products, Director of Proteomics Marketing, and Director of Business Development responsible for LC/MS product strategy.

He has a Ph.D. in organic mass spectrometry specializing in electrospray from King's College, London with two credited patents. He has completed the Consortium for Executive Development Program at Babson College, MA.
